Adventure Britain: Multi-Activity Specialists

Fancy getting properly wet and wild in Snowdonia? Adventure Britain are your blokes. They do gorge walking and coasteering mainly, and they do them well. Here's what to expect.

Adventure Britain: Multi-Activity Specialists

Right, let's talk about Adventure Britain. They're a Snowdonia-based outfit specialising in gorge walking and coasteering. They're not the biggest name in North Wales, unlike say Zip World with their Velocity 2 zip line, but what they do offer, they do it properly. These lads and lasses aren't just in it for the money, they clearly love the outdoors and want to share that passion.

What They Do

Gorge walking and coasteering are their bread and butter, and for good reason. Snowdonia's landscape is perfect for both. Think steep-sided valleys carved out by ancient glaciers, now filled with fast-flowing rivers, and a coastline that's rugged, dramatic, and just begging to be explored.

  • Gorge Walking: Imagine scrambling up a river, jumping into pools, sliding down waterfalls – all under the watchful eye of experienced guides. You'll be kitted out with a wetsuit, buoyancy aid, and helmet, so you're safe and reasonably warm (even in summer, those mountain streams can be bracing!). Expect to be in the water for a good few hours.
  • Coasteering: This is all about exploring the coastline from the water. Think scrambling over rocks, swimming into caves, and leaping off cliffs (don't worry, there are always options for different jump heights). Again, wetsuit, buoyancy aid, and helmet are essential. They might even head over to Anglesey's coast for this activity.

They sometimes offer bespoke adventures too, but that's less common. If you're looking for something niche, give them a ring, but don't expect miracles.

What Makes Them Different?

Lots of companies offer outdoor activities in Snowdonia, so why choose Adventure Britain?

  • Focus: They stick to what they're good at. They don't try to be everything to everyone. You want white water rafting? Head to the National White Water Centre. Looking for climbing instruction? Plas y Brenin is your best bet. But for gorge walking and coasteering, these guys are hard to beat.
  • Experience: The guides are all experienced outdoor professionals, qualified and knowledgeable. They know the gorges and coastlines like the back of their hands, and they're good at judging people's abilities and adapting the session accordingly.
  • Small Groups: They tend to run smaller group sizes than some of the bigger operators. This means you get more individual attention and a more personal experience. It also means they can be more flexible with the route and the challenges.
  • Local Knowledge: They really know Snowdonia and can share little bits of its history and ecology. It's not just about the adrenaline rush.

The Nitty Gritty

Let's get down to the practical stuff:

  • Prices (2025/2026 season, estimated):

* Gorge Walking: £65-£95 per person, depending on the location and duration.

* Coasteering: Similar pricing to gorge walking, but might be slightly more depending on location and group size.

  • What's Included: All the necessary equipment (wetsuit, buoyancy aid, helmet), instruction from experienced guides, and transport to and from the activity location from a central meeting point.
  • What to Bring: Swimsuit, towel, sturdy footwear (old trainers are ideal), and a sense of adventure!
  • Booking: Booking is essential, especially during peak season (summer and school holidays). You can book online via their website or give them a call.
  • Location: They operate in various locations around Snowdonia, but their main base is near Llanberis. This makes them ideally placed for exploring both the mountains and the coast. Llanberis itself gets very busy in summer – get there early for parking.
  • Parking: Parking in Llanberis can be a nightmare, especially on a sunny day. There are several car parks, but they fill up quickly. Be prepared to park further out of the village and walk in. Expect to pay around £5-£8 for a full day's parking.

Who Is This For?

  • Ideal For: Adventurous individuals, families with older children (teenagers will love it), groups of friends, and anyone looking for a unique and exhilarating way to experience Snowdonia's landscape.
  • Not Ideal For: People who are afraid of heights, water, or confined spaces. While they cater for a range of abilities, you do need to be reasonably fit and confident in the water. If you have young kids, maybe try the Zip World Fforest Coaster instead.
  • Difficulty: I'd rate their gorge walking and coasteering as "moderate". It's not extreme, but it's not a walk in the park either. You'll be doing some scrambling, swimming, and jumping, so a reasonable level of fitness is required.

Seasonal Considerations

Snowdonia is beautiful year-round, but the weather can be unpredictable.

  • Summer (June-August): This is peak season, with the warmest temperatures and the driest weather. However, it's also the busiest time of year, so expect crowds and higher prices. The water temperature will still be cool, but the wetsuit will keep you comfortable.
  • Spring/Autumn (April-May/September-October): These are great times to visit, with fewer crowds and milder weather. The water temperature will be cooler than in summer, so a thicker wetsuit might be needed. Be prepared for changeable weather – it can be sunny one minute and raining the next.
  • Winter (November-March): Gorge walking and coasteering are generally not offered in winter due to the cold water temperatures and the risk of ice. However, some companies might offer bespoke winter adventures for experienced individuals.

Other Options in Snowdonia

If gorge walking or coasteering isn't your thing, there's plenty of other adventures to be had in Snowdonia:

  • Mountain Biking at Coed y Brenin: Miles of trails for all abilities. Parking costs apply (£2-7).
  • Hiking Snowdon: Take the Llanberis Path, or if you're feeling brave, tackle Crib Goch with a guide from MountainXperience.
  • Sea Kayaking: Explore the coastline from a different perspective. Plas y Brenin offer excellent courses.

So, there you have it. If you're looking for a proper Welsh adventure, give Adventure Britain a shout. Just be prepared to get wet, have a laugh, and experience Snowdonia in a way you'll never forget. And maybe pack a flask of something warming for afterwards – you'll have earned it!
