Best Adventures Near Cardiff: Day Trip Guide

Cardiff's a great base, but sometimes you need a proper dose of Welsh adventure. Here are a couple of my favourite day trips for getting out of the city and into the hills and waves, suited for different fitness levels.

Best Adventures Near Cardiff: Day Trip Guide

So, Cardiff. Cracking city, right? But let's be honest, sometimes you need to swap the concrete jungle for, well, an actual jungle – or at least a decent imitation of one in the South Wales Valleys. And sometimes, only the Atlantic will do. Here are two day trips that'll scratch that adventure itch, without requiring a week off work.

Mountain Biking at Afan Forest Park

Activity: mountain-biking

Terrain: forest, valley, woodland

Difficulty: easy, moderate

Feature: dog-friendly, free-parking, equipment-provided

Amenity: cafe, toilets, showers, bike-shop, camping

Region: south-wales-valleys

Forget what you think you know about the Valleys. Okay, maybe keep some of it. But Afan Forest Park is a revelation. We're talking world-class mountain biking trails, built and maintained with serious love and dedication.

Getting There: It's about a 45-minute drive from Cardiff. Head up the A470, then the A4061 towards Port Talbot, and follow signs for Afan Forest Park. Plenty of free parking at the visitor centre.

The Trails: Afan has trails for everyone. If you're a complete beginner, stick to the "Easy Rider" trail – it's a gentle introduction, mostly flat, and perfect for families. For something more challenging, try "The Wall." It's a classic Afan trail – proper climbs, fast descents, and berms that'll make you grin like an idiot. Be warned, "The Wall" lives up to its name – it's a proper climb!

Bike Hire: Several places offer bike hire. Afan Valley Bike Shed (right at the visitor centre) is a good bet. Expect to pay around £40 for a decent hardtail for the day in 2025. Booking in advance is essential, especially on weekends.

Who Should Go: Anyone with a basic level of fitness and a desire to get muddy. Families can easily enjoy the easier trails, while experienced riders will find plenty to challenge them. If you're after manicured bike park trails and uplifts, head to BikePark Wales in the Brecon Beacons instead (allow another hour drive).

The Reality Check: This isn't the Alps. It rains. A lot. Even in summer. Check the weather forecast and pack accordingly. A decent waterproof jacket is essential. Also, the trails can get busy, especially on weekends and during school holidays. Go early to beat the crowds.

Post-Ride Grub: The cafe at the visitor centre is okay for a quick coffee and a cake, but don't expect Michelin stars. Pack a picnic or head into nearby Aberavon for some proper seaside fish and chips.

Surfing at Porthcawl (Rest Bay)

Activity: surfing, bodyboarding

Terrain: beach, coastal

Difficulty: beginner-friendly, moderate

Feature: dog-friendly, free-parking, equipment-provided, wetsuit-provided

Amenity: cafe, toilets, showers, changing-rooms, lockers

Region: south-wales-valleys

Fancy catching some waves? Porthcawl, specifically Rest Bay, is your best bet for surfing near Cardiff. It's a relatively sheltered beach break, making it ideal for beginners.

Getting There: Another easy drive from Cardiff – about 30-40 minutes via the M4. Follow the signs for Porthcawl, then Rest Bay. Parking can be a pain in the backside, especially on sunny weekends. Get there early (before 10am) or be prepared to park a fair walk away. It's often pay-and-display. Expect to pay around £6 for 4 hours parking in 2025.

The Surf: Rest Bay is a long, sandy beach with a gentle slope. The waves are usually small and forgiving, perfect for learning to surf. Even on a choppy day there are usually waves that are safe for beginners.

Surf Schools: Plenty of surf schools operate at Rest Bay. Porthcawl Surf School and Cressey's Surf Academy are both reputable. A two-hour beginner lesson, including board and wetsuit hire, will set you back around £40-£45 in 2025. Book in advance, especially during peak season.

Who Should Go: Anyone who's ever fancied giving surfing a go. Rest Bay is ideal for complete beginners, but even more experienced surfers can have fun on a good day. It's also great for families, with plenty of space for kids to play on the beach. If you are an experienced surfer, you might prefer the consistent larger waves down in the Gower.

The Reality Check: The water is cold. Even in summer. A decent wetsuit is essential. Most surf schools provide them, but if you're planning on surfing regularly, it's worth investing in your own. Also, the weather can be unpredictable. One minute it's sunny, the next it's raining. Be prepared for anything. And remember, the sea can be dangerous. Always check the tide times and the surf report before you go. Never surf alone. And listen to the lifeguards. They know what they're doing.

Beyond Surfing: Porthcawl has plenty to offer besides surfing. Take a walk along the coast path, visit the funfair, or grab an ice cream on the seafront.

Alternative Adventures Near Cardiff

These are just a couple of ideas to get you started. If mountain biking and surfing aren't your thing, there are plenty of other adventures to be had within easy reach of Cardiff.

  • Hiking in the Brecon Beacons: Pen y Fan, the highest peak in South Wales, is only an hour's drive from Cardiff. Plenty of challenging hikes and stunning views. [Link to Brecon Beacons guide]
  • Coasteering in Pembrokeshire: A bit further afield (about 2 hours from Cardiff), but well worth the drive. Explore the rugged Pembrokeshire coastline by swimming, climbing, and jumping into the sea. [Link to Pembrokeshire guide]
  • Caving in the South Wales Valleys: Explore the underground world with a guided caving trip. Dan yr Ogof Showcaves are popular, but there are also more adventurous caving options available. [Link to caving guide]
